This modern family home was designed for an elevated site in Co. Down, it takes advantage of uninterrupted southern 180° views towards the Mourne Mountains.  The scheme has been inspired by a cluster of vernacular forms, each orientated to maximise the solar gain from the southern aspect. Picture windows are used to target specific views towards the surrounding landscape.  The palette of materials includes smooth dark render, red cedar timber cladding and a standing seam zinc flat roof.  The arrangement of the building and the use of these materials gives a contemporary twist to the traditional vernacular forms, whilst still being sympathetic to the natural environment and a neighbouring dwelling.

The clients’ brief included the desire to have a sustainable dwelling that utilises modern construction methods and technology.  The main living block is south facing, with large areas of glazing make the most of the solar gain.  This space is further enhanced by a vaulted ceiling and a change in floor level, while a single two storey element allows for a raised master suite to take full advantage of the morning sun and mountain views.
